a kind of blue/green dolphin
there are almost 40 species of dolphin across 17 genera. they vary in size from 1.2 metres and 40 kg, up to 9.5 metres and 10 tonnes. most species weigh between about 50 and 200 kg. they are found all over the world, mostly in the shallower seas of the continental shelves, and are all carnivores, taking mostly fish and squid. knowledge about the cognitive capabilities of the dolphin brain and the nature & magnitude of dolphin intelligence is still very limited because of major research difficulties. studies based on captive dolphins have limits, because it is not clear how natural their behaviour is under those conditions.
